Hospice and Palliative Care Groups Push for Expanded In-Home Care Model
Two leading organizations in hospice and palliative care are calling for a new Medicare fee-for-service model that would expand access to community-based palliative care for patients with advanced illness before they enter hospice.
The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation and the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care say current Medicare reimbursement leaves a gap for patients who are seriously ill but not yet eligible for hospice services.
“The population is aging so quickly and dramatically, and we need to find ways to allow people to stay in the home longer as they advance in their illness and need care.”
Advocates argue that a structured, sustainable reimbursement model could reduce hospital and emergency room use while improving the quality of life for patients and caregivers.
