New Study Regarding Heatwaves and the Dangers for Seniors

Heat waves are becoming deadlier, and a recent nationwide study shows the toll is rising every year. Most troubling is who bears the greatest burden; Black and low-income communities are disproportionately affected. However, the research also offers a hopeful finding: neighborhoods with more green space consistently see lower death rates.

"Their findings suggest that climate-driven increases in the number of heat waves pose a major and growing threat to public health in the United States, especially for older adults in Black communities and residents of high-poverty neighborhoods, while investments in creating more green space could provide meaningful protection." - Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

The study also revealed how heat waves are taking lives. Heart attacks, Alzheimer's complications, pneumonia, and COPD are among the leading culprits, proof that extreme heat threatens even those sheltered indoors, particularly our most vulnerable populations.
