Top-Ranked States Still Struggle with Senior Health Issues
The UnitedHealth Foundation’s 2025 Senior Report shows that even the healthiest states—like Vermont, Colorado, and Washington—face serious senior health challenges, including high fall rates and low hospice care use.
Vermont, for example, ranks high in physical activity and low chronic illness, but still reports elevated suicide and fall risks among older adults. Meanwhile, lower-ranked states like Mississippi struggle with poverty and early deaths but show some strengths, such as better access to primary care.
National trends are mixed: drug-related deaths and poverty among seniors are rising, while excessive drinking and early death rates are improving. A shortage of direct care workers and uneven hospice use highlight the need for more targeted senior care strategies.
The key to successfully mitigating any emergency is preparedness. CHUG members have access to a comprehensive suite of educational workshops that utilize real-life case studies to teach effective responses to emergency situations. This training can be lifesaving.
