Nursing Home Staffing Debate May Not Be Over

While the federal nursing home staffing mandate has been rolled back for now, former CMS official Jonathan Blum recently warned that similar requirements could return in the future, depending on political shifts after the November elections.

Industry leaders are continuing to push for more practical staffing solutions that reflect the real challenges long-term care facilities face, including workforce shortages, rising resident acuity, and financial pressure.

“There needs to be a better understanding of what facilities are actually facing day to day, from staffing shortages to financial pressures to rising resident acuity.”

At the same time, CMS continues moving toward value-based care models that place greater focus on quality outcomes and operational performance across skilled nursing facilities.
